Recently, Hochul suggested she plans to stay involved in New York politics through 2038, which raises serious questions about the future of leadership in the state. Because New York has no gubernatorial term limits, it is entirely possible for a governor to remain in office for decades if they continue winning elections.
With no major Democratic primary challengers and Republicans struggling to win statewide races, what would actually stop Governor Hochul from staying in power that long? Is the political structure of New York creating a de facto one-party system? Are voters satisfied with the current direction of the state, or is there growing frustration about cost of living, taxes, crime, and the ongoing population exodus from New York?
We’ll break down the political math, the policy record, and the possible challengers who could emerge before the 2026 election and beyond. Is Hochul serious about staying that long? Should New Yorkers want that level of continuity—or is it time for major change?
