Today we’re digging into one of New York’s biggest crises: sky-high rents — and whether Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to freeze rent will actually help or make things worse.
If rents are frozen, will Mamdani be forced to bail out landlords to keep buildings from collapsing financially? Will he fine property owners who can’t afford to comply? And if landlords can’t pay their bills, how will they maintain buildings, avoid foreclosure, or prevent further housing shortages?
We’ll also discuss proposals to ban private equity from investing in NYC housing — how would you even enforce that? And if developers can’t make money, who will build the new housing New York desperately needs?
